At the forefront of the new wave of Spaniard filmmakers in the 1990s, with his daring and provocative vision, Juanma Bajo Ulloa is one of the most precocious and talented directors in Spanish cinema. 

At the age of 24, he won San Sebastián International Film Festival with his dazzling debut, “Alas de Mariposa”. 

His second film, “La Madre Muerta”, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, is considered a cult classic. “Airbag” (1997) broke box office records in Spain, pioneering the “new Spanish comedy” genre.
Celebrated for his audacity and independent spirit, his films have earned numerous accolades around the world, including 7 Goya Awards from the Spanish Film Academy, the Ondas Prize, and recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle. 

His latest work, “Baby” (2020), a wordless tribute to cinema, has received widespread acclaim.
“El Mal” (2025), is arguably the project that most fully encapsulates the essence of his filmmaking.
